Facing one of the most beloved parks in Tokyo these two identical houses conceived for two sisters and their families sit on a very irregularly shaped plot in a dense residential area. The challenge of getting enough sun light and privacy was achieved by moving the living quarters and gardens to the first floor setting back as much as possible from the neighbors to create a green filter between the house and them.

The ground floor hosting the entrance, main bathroom and the bedrooms is imagined as a solid podium adapting to the site shape, with selected openings providing views while keeping privacy. Above, the first floor is conceived as a large airy and bright open space that combines living, dining, kitchen and a study room. Its structure is composed by an array of timber portals holding up a large, angled roof that allows plenty of daylight in the building while complying with the strict shadow regulation. The walls are not touching the ceiling giving increased depth to the space. Outside, multiple terrace gardens are built on top of the solid podium to make this elevated level feel like a ground floor.
